Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about hypnotherapy
What should I expect from hypnotherapy?
The goal of the hypnotherapy sessions is to help you identify what changes you want to make and then find ways in which you can achieve this. You might do this by seeing things from a fresh perspective, by understanding where your problems come from, by using your existing knowledge and skills differently or by learning new coping strategies.
A variety of techniques is likely to be involved, and you may be asked to carry out tasks, practise or planning between sessions. All information given in a therapy session is treated as confidential. Most therapy is given on a one to one basis. However, arrangements can be made for small groups wishing to work together on the same issue.
Do you swing a watch?
No. Hypnosis can be achieved by a number of methods, including relaxation, narrowed focussing of your attention etc. The men (and they were pretty much all men) who first investigated the medical and emotional benefits of hypnosis were middle-class Victorian gentlemen who all routinely wore a pocket watch on a chain. These were used to narrow the client's focus because they were convenient and not because there is anything special about a watch.
Am I under your control?
No, in fact quite the opposite. Stage hypnotists work hard to make what they do seem like mind control because it makes a better act. Most people seeking hypnotherapy do so because they have already lost control in some way (for example continuing to smoke when they don't really want to). The goal of therapy is to get that control back again.
How many sessions will I need?
Quite understandably, this is one of the most commonly asked questions. Unfortunately, it can also be the most difficult to answer.
Every person and every situation is different, and so is every course of hypnotherapy. It's a bit like booking driving lessons. You can guess how many lessons you'll need based on averages, but you don't know for sure till you get behind the wheel! Working on averages, to achieve long-lasting change most people have between four and six sessions.

Does hypnotherapy work?
The Million Dollar Question! And the best answer is 'it depends on you'. As you can see above, hypnotherapy can be very successful but it's also an interactive process, which means we work together and you play a vital, active role in your therapy.
So, if you are looking for a quick fix or a 'magical' answer, then the answer is no.
If you want someone else to take responsibility for your difficulties, or to do all the work so you don't have to, then the answer is no.
If the only reason you are considering therapy is that someone else thinks there's a problem, but you don't, then the answer is probably no.
But if you want to change, can be open-minded about hypnosis, and are willing to play an active part in achieving your goals, the answer is yes.
